Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 05 (ANI): At least 30 children died in past 48 hours at Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur. Of these, 15 deaths took place in Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and 15 in paediatrics intensive care unit (PICU). 10 children were admitted and 8 died in NICU while 36 children were admitted to PICU and 10 died from Thursday midnight to Friday midnight. The BRD Medical College caters to a wide area, so when patients come from far away areas there diseases become graver. According to WHO, the three major causes of neonatal deaths worldwide are infections (36%, which includes sepsis/pneumonia, tetanus and diarrhoea), pre-term (28%), and birth asphyxia (23%). In absence of timely treatment, these infants can even succumb to the diseases. Earlier in August, over 70 children had died in the same hospital due to lack of oxygen supply. The hospital as well as the government had received flak over the negligence.
