New Delhi, Aug 18 (ANI): Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan passed away at the age of 80 after a short illness, announced United Nations on Saturday. Annan had served two terms as the Secretary General spanning from 1997 to 2006. He even won Nobel peace prize for his humanitarian work in 2001. He was the first black African to serve in the post of a UN Secretary General. Originally from Ghana, Annan retired and moved to Geneva. From there he moved to a village in Switzerland. He breathed his last at a hospital in Bern, surrounded by his family. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences saying, "We express our profound sorrow at the passing away of Nobel Laureate and former UNSG Mr. Kofi Annan. The world has lost not only a great African diplomat and humanitarian but also a conscience keeper of international peace and security."
