Bengaluru, Nov 02 (ANI): In a first, Karnataka government honoured a transgender social worker with its second highest civilian award, Rajyotsava Award for her work towards the betterment of the marginalised community. Creating history, the Karnataka government included Akkai Padmashali to the record of awardees. Born as a boy, Padmashali embraced the reality of being a transgender. Born and brought up in Bengaluru city, Padmashali took up the challenge to fight for her community and demanded recognition and rights for the LGBT group in the society. However, she was delighted and appreciated that the state government recognised her deeds for the marginalised society. Padmashali was also a target to sexual violence after which she began to work in a local NGO which addressed the issues of dignity, violence and gender sexuality.
