Ladakh (Jammu and Kashmir), July 08 (ANI): 82-year-old Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetans in exile celebrated his birthday in Ladakh. Thousand of Tibetans including government officials and Members of Tibetan Parliament in-exile, monks, nuns and devotees from around the world gathered in Ladakh to celebrate his birthday. Dalai Lama who fled Tibet's capital Lhasa in 1959 after the Chinese intrusion, will turn 82 on July 6. Fondly referred to as "His Holiness" by the Tibetan community, Tenzin Gyatso is currently on retreat. Born on July 6, 1935, the 14th Dalai Lama, is one of the longest serving lamas of the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism. The Dalai Lama denies espousing violence and says he only wants genuine autonomy for Tibet. The Dalai Lama has been conferred the Noble Peace Prize, the Templeton Prize and many honorary degrees and other awards. The Dalia Lama thanked the crowd for their participation.
